Recommended Aftercare

If plastic wrap was utilized to protect your tattoo, it is advisable to keep the plastic wrap on for approximately two hours. In my practice, I often use Dermshield, a reliable brand that can be left on for three to four days. The best part is that the adhesive bandage is waterproof, allowing you to shower without any discomfort. This means you can go about your daily activities with minimal to no inconvenience, while still giving your new tattoo the much-needed protection from infection, scabbing, and other irritants. However, please remember to inform me if you have any known allergies to Dermshield before we apply it to your new tattoo.

When the time comes to remove the bandage and unveil your fresh tattoo, it's essential to handle it with care. Begin the process by gently rinsing away any residue that may have gathered on your masterpiece. Use warm water to ensure optimum cleanliness. Afterward, take a moment to cleanse the area delicately using antibacterial soap, ensuring that every inch of your newly adorned skin is free from any potential irritants.
To maintain a healthy and hygienic healing process, it is vital to dry your tattoo thoroughly. Simply patting it down with a clean paper towel will assist in the removal of excess moisture, allowing your skin to breathe and heal naturally. Once dry, you can proceed to apply a thin layer of Aquaphor ointment as needed, offering much-needed moisture and protection to your delicate artwork. This step plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the healing process progresses smoothly, as the desired moisture will help facilitate optimal healing.

Things to keep in mind

When it comes to taking care of your new tattoo, there are a few important points to remember. Firstly, it is perfectly normal for there to be a buildup of excess ink, blood, plasma, and other body fluids underneath the bandage.
Another crucial aspect of tattoo aftercare is to avoid using any soaps or lotions that contain fragrances or harsh chemicals. These can easily irritate your skin and hinder the healing process. So, it's best to opt for gentle, fragrance-free products when it comes to cleaning and moisturizing the tattooed area.
During the peeling process, it's important to resist the urge to scratch or pick at the tattoo, even if it becomes itchy. This can disrupt the healing process and potentially lead to complications. Instead, focus on keeping the tattoo clean and dry, away from direct sunlight, to allow it to heal properly.
Additionally, it is advisable to steer clear of tanning beds, intense gym workouts, and prolonged soaking in water during the healing period. These activities can put unnecessary strain on the tattooed skin and potentially affect the final outcome of your new ink.
Furthermore, it is recommended to avoid alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours after getting your tattoo. Alcohol can thin the blood and increase the risk of bleeding, which is something you want to avoid during the initial healing period.
If you have opted for a dermshield bandage, it's essential to keep an eye out for any signs of allergic reaction. These typically manifest as redness around the edge of the bandage, rather than on the tattoo itself. If you notice any irritation or discomfort, it is crucial to remove the bandage immediately and follow the aftercare instructions as usual. If you have particularly sensitive skin, it may be best to avoid using the dermshield and instead opt for the traditional method of healing with cling wrap. If you experience any severe or concerning symptoms, it is always recommended to seek medical attention promptly.

By keeping these important points in mind and following the appropriate aftercare instructions, you can ensure the best possible healing process and long-term results for your new tattoo.
